Can You Learn How to Taste Wine??
Absolutely, yes! Just like anything else, wine tasting is a skill you can learn. No wine expert, sommelier, or winemaker was born knowing everything about wine — it all comes down to experience and practice.
What You Should Know About Wine Tasting:
Wine is an incredibly complex drink. The aromas and flavors you detect in a wine largely depend on where it comes from. The terroir of a country or region — meaning the soil, microclimate, and general climate — all leave their mark on the character of the wine.If you're ready to dive into the world of wine tasting, here are a few things to focus on:
If you're ready to dive into the world of wine tasting, here are a few things to focus on:
- Look at the Color
When tasting white wine, check how clear or cloudy it is. (With natural wines, clarity is less important.) What color does it remind you of? Pale straw, golden, amber? The color can tell you something about the age of the wine and the winemaking techniques.
For example, a golden hue might indicate extended skin contact or oak aging. - Smell - Enter the World of Aromas
Take a deep sniff from the glass — even with your eyes closed. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Identify fruits, spices, vegetables, flowers, and imagine them. Is it fruity? Fresh? Bright? Or maybe murky and off-putting? Write down whatever you sense.Pro tip: you can train your sense of smell by consciously smelling spices, fruits, and vegetables at home — and tasting them when possible.Think of it as building an aroma reference library in your brain. The more you do it, the better you’ll become at recognizing wine aromas.Your brain can identify these scents, but practice makes perfect. Professional wine tasters may sample tens of thousands of wines a year — and that’s no small feat when you think about it! - Taste as Much as You Can – Mindfully!
Try wines made from the same grape variety but from different countries or regions. This helps you recognize stylistic differences and sharpen your senses — one of the most effective ways to improve.
